Stitch Fix is a personal styling service that operates in the United States and the United Kingdom. It personalizes clothing items based on size, budget, and style using recommendation algorithms and data science. The company was founded in 2011 and raised $1.6 billion in an initial public offering in 2017. It is headquarters are in San Francisco, California, and it employs 8,000 people globally.
Stitch Fix was founded in 2011 by Katrina Lake and Erin Morrison Flynn, a former J. Crew buyer. The company was originally known as Rack Habit, and it operated out of Lake’s apartment in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Stitch Fix became profitable in 2014. In July 2016, the company ended its fiscal year with $730 million in sales, and in May 2017, it raised $42 million from outside investors. Elizabeth Spaulding stepped down as CEO on January 5, 2023, and the founder Katrina Lake took over as interim CEO.
Stitch Fix sends pre-selected clothing and accessories for a one-time styling fee. Customers respond to an online survey about their fashion preferences. A company stylist selects five items to send to the customer. Stylists choose items based on survey responses and any access the customer grants them to their social media outlets. The customer schedules a “Fix” date for when they will receive their items. After receiving the shipment, the customer has three days to decide whether to keep the items or return some or all of them. If the customer keeps at least one item, the initial styling fee is applied to the item’s cost.
If the customer decides to keep all five items, he or she will receive a 25% discount on the total cost of the items. Customers select the frequency of delivery, such as every two weeks, monthly, or every two months. Customers can also add photos of fashion looks they like to their Pinterest boards, which the company supports. A Stitch Fix stylist may view these boards. For a personalized recommendation, the company employs data science and has combined personal stylists and machine learning (AI).
To begin, visit Stitch Fix’s website and take a style quiz. You will be asked a series of questions during the quiz. You provide a lot of personal information during the quiz. (In fact, the initial style quiz alone generates “90+ meaningful data points” for Stitch Fix.) Stitch Fix requests your date of birth, height, and weight. You are also asked what sizes you usually wear for items such as shirts, blazers, pants, and outerwear, how you would describe your body type, and how you prefer your clothing to fit.
