Zumba is an exercise program that was founded in the fall of 1999. The program was created by Colombian dancer and choreographer, Alberto “Beto” Perez. One day, he forgot his regular music for his aerobics class so he pulled out some cassette tapes of hip-hop music and started dancing to them. Zumba comes from the original name, “Rumbacize”, which means “to party” in Spanish, along with Jazzercise. There are approximately 15 million people taking Zumba in over 200,000 locations within almost 200 countries.
There are several versions of Zumba. The original Zumba class is perfect for everyone. Zumba Step is for people looking to strengthen and tone their legs and glutes. Zumba Toning is for people who want to put extra emphasis on toning and sculpting to define their muscles. Aqua Zumba uses water and adds a low-impact high-energy aquatic exercise to the fitness routine. Zumba Sentao is used to tone the whole body. It is a more serious, high-intensity workout. Zumba Gold is for active older adults who are looking for a modified Zumba class that recreates the original moves at a lower intensity. Zumba Gold-Toning is tailored for active older adults who want to focus on muscle conditioning and lightweight activity. Zumba Kids is for kids aged 7-11 and gives them a chance to work out. Zumba Kids Jr. is for kids between the ages of 4-6. Zumbini is for kids between the ages of 0-3 years of age. Zumba in the Circuit is for those who want to add circuit training to their Zumba routine. Plate by Zumba is designed to give you the education you need to make healthier choices and live a better life.
