Founded in 1976 and incorporated as Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc., the company began offering plans in Canada in 1999. In 2010, Stonecipher stepped down as president and CEO, with Randy Harp and Mark Brown taking over as co-CEOs and Harp as company president. The company rebranded in 2011 and was purchased by MidOcean Partners and Stone Point Capital in 2018. In 2019, LegalShield expanded into the UK with offices in Oxford and an arrangement with Slater & Gordon UK to provide legal advice via the LegalDefence app.

The Small Business Plan offers three different plans with various services. The Small Business Legal Essentials plan is $49.00 per month and includes advice, consultation, and research, designated consultations, MEMBERPerks, a 25% Preferred Member Discount, 2 designated users, 10 letters and phone calls a year or up to 3 per month, 10 document reviews of up to 15 pages per year or up to 3 per month, and 5 collection letters per month. The Small Business Legal Plus plan is $99.00 per month and includes advice, consultation, and research, designated consultations, MEMBERPerks, a 25% Preferred Member Discount, 3 designated users, 20 letters and phone calls a year or up to 5 per month, 20 document reviews of up to 20 pages per year or up to 5 per month, and 10 collections letters per month. It also offers flat-fee services such as trademark and copyright for $500 and custom contract drafting up to 25 pages for $250. The IRS auditing services include 25 hours of help / 2.5 hours of representation or negotiation / 21.5 hours of trial time. Interstate services are covered for half of all letters and phone calls, advice and consultation, document review, designated consultations, and collection letters.
