Blair, Inc. is one of the largest mail-order retailers in the United States and has been operating since 1910. Founded by John Leo Blair, the company began with the production of raincoats. Blair created an innovative coat design that included a black wool cloth outer layer and a Scottish plaid lining. Although he initially found it difficult to sell the coats, eventually they became a hit and even caused customers to be unable to secure one.
In 1916, Mr. Blair changed the name of his business to New Process Company and opened a retail store in 1920 near the headquarters in Warren, Pennsylvania. Another location was opened in Jamestown, NY. The company went public on the American Stock Exchange in 1924 and began adding a variety of merchandise such as appliances, perfume, and healthcare products.
However, the Great Depression began in September 1929 and caused many businesses and people to suffer. Despite the challenging times, Blair, Inc. was able to remain afloat and even grew to become the biggest employer in Warren County, Pennsylvania, with approximately 1200 employees.
Today, the company is still thriving and has millions of customers ordering mail-order retail catalogs, through phone, mail, and online. Economic conditions took a dive during the 1930s, affecting countless businesses, including the New Process Company. As sales plummeted to approximately half of the sales between 1925 and 1929, the company was able to maintain a steady income. In an effort to stay afloat, New Process Company began to look for new customers and eventually took the steps to become one of the biggest mail-order companies in the world.
One of the most impressive aspects of Blair Corporation was its resilience during difficult economic times. By reaching out to customers who were conscious about their spending and cutting costs, the company attracted even more customers who wanted to save money. This additional income allowed Blair to open more warehouses, update existing facilities, and even install an automated conveyor belt system in 1950. As the company continued to grow in the 60s, the original founder, John Blair, passed away in 1962. With investors taking notice of the company’s ability to increase sales and keep debt low, Blair installed computers in 1965 to print shipping labels and free up storage space by removing the addressograph system. By 1976, the company had over 11 million customers in the US and sales totaling almost $200 million.
John Blair’s son, John Blair Jr., eventually took the reigns and directed the company to become the biggest publicly traded direct mail business in the US. Computers were used to create bi-weekly mailings to over 12 million customers, resulting in 40,000 orders a day. In 1989, the company officially changed its name to Blair Corporation. However, Blair struggled to maintain sales in the 2000s due to an economic recession. To stay afloat, the shareholders approved a merger with Appleseed in 2007.
