In 1961, Jean Nidetch was an overweight 40-year-old homemaker living in Queens, New York. At 214 pounds and wearing a size 44 dress, she had long been plagued by a weight problem. Feeling discouraged, Nidetch attended a diet seminar offered by the City Board of Health in New York City. There, she was introduced to the Prudent Diet, which forbids alcohol, sweets, and fatty foods, while providing a list of approved foods and recommended portion sizes. After successfully losing 20 pounds during the 10-week program, Nidetch started a weekly support group in her apartment. Initially inviting six overweight friends, the group quickly grew to 40 women.
