About Vimeo

People enjoy watching videos on the internet. That is why video streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu have become so popular. It’s why platforms like YouTube, Facebook Live, and Twitter continue to attract large audiences. Even the gaming and esports industries have found a home on platforms like Twitch and Mixer. Most of these platforms, including Vimeo, are similar in that they attract and cater to specific audiences. Vimeo is a video platform popular among artists, advertisers, and other creative types. If you fall into any of those categories, Vimeo is a great place to share and consume high-quality video content, though it does have some drawbacks, including pricey paid tiers and a disappointing web portal. Vimeo is best suited for people who value high-quality content over what is currently trending. Short films, animation, educational pieces, and in-depth journalism are all welcome. The consistent quality of Vimeo’s offerings is a breath of fresh air after wading through YouTube’s sea of hit-or-miss content, though the most recent viral videos are unlikely to be found on Vimeo. In short, Vimeo is more akin to a private art gallery than a public convention-like experience on YouTube. Sure, the former is more expensive and less popular, but its works are usually of higher quality. There’s nothing stopping you from uploading the same content to YouTube and Vimeo, but you’ll be more successful if you respect the audience differences. Both YouTube and Vimeo recommend similar encoding and compression standards from a technical standpoint. You should carefully read their respective guides for the highest-quality uploads. Nonetheless, there are many potential benefits to Vimeo’s smaller audience, most notably that your video will have fewer competitors. If you don’t already have a popular channel, YouTube can feel overcrowded at times, and your video may go unnoticed. Anyone can watch videos on Vimeo without being throttled, but if you want to upload content, you must first sign up for a Basic account. This free account allows you to upload up to 500MB of data per week (a total of 5GB) and includes basic privacy settings, statistics, and customer support. Vimeo Plus costs $12 per month ($7 per month if billed annually) and allows you to upload up to 250GB of content per year. It adds priority video conversion, advanced privacy features, custom stats, priority support, video customizations, and social distribution tools to the basic account. Vimeo’s Pro plan costs $20 per month and allows you to upload up to 1TB of content per year. Vimeo Pro adds more privacy, statistics, support, and customization options to the Plus subscription. It also includes additional video tools (such as time-coded notes, secure sharing, and version history) and allows you to collaborate with up to three other people. The Vimeo Business account is $50 per month, has no weekly upload limits, and provides you and your team with 5TB of storage. This plan includes priority support, Google Analytics integration, and up to ten team members. The top-tier plan, Vimeo Premium ($75 per month), includes all of the functionality of the Business tier but also includes unlimited live streaming in 1080p and a 7TB archive storage limit. If you want to charge for videos on Vimeo On Demand, you’ll need a Pro, Business, or Premium plan. After signing up for the appropriate plan, all you have to do is upload your video along with a trailer, decide whether you want it to be available for purchase or rent (or both), and then set a price. You keep approximately 90% of the total revenue after taxes and fees. YouTube, on the other hand, is completely free and only limits the number of videos you can upload per day to 100 or 50 if you already have over 2,000 uploaded. Please don’t push yourself to those limits for the sake of your sanity; no one person or organization is that compelling. The default account setting limits you to 15-minute uploads, but once verified, that increases to 128 GB or 12 hours of footage (whichever is less). To make money on YouTube, you must first meet the requirements for its Partner Program (Opens in a new window). For consideration, your channel must have 4,000 watch hours in the previous 12 months and 1,000 subscribers. If YouTube approves your channel, you must then link an AdSense account and configure your preferences before you can earn money. Vimeo’s web interface is usable but disorganized. In some places, it employs lengthy menu lists, often with redundant options that appear elsewhere on the screen. Most screens have a lot of whitespaces, inconsistent color highlights, and no real focal point, which makes it difficult to focus. Overall, Vimeo’s dashboard appears dull, especially given that it is a platform aimed at creativity. Even a dark mode would be a huge step forward. The design of YouTube’s Creator Studio is more consistent and intuitive. Vimeo displays the Manage videos, Watch, On Demand, and Upgrade options across the top header bar. The right-hand profile menu allows you to quickly navigate to your uploads or messages. The Account Settings section provides a wealth of options, but the page itself is lengthy. Vimeo should improve the organization of this section. Fill out your basic profile information, set your notification preferences, and manage your payments here. The Do More tab near the bottom offers quick access to additional actions such as uploading or organizing your videos, viewing stats and upgrading your account.
