AT&T Inc. is an American multinational telecommunications holding company headquartered at Whitacre Tower in Downtown Dallas, Texas. It is the world’s largest telecommunications company by revenue and the third-largest provider of mobile telephone services in the U.S. As of 2022, AT&T was ranked 13th on the Fortune 500 rankings of the largest United States corporations, with revenues of $168.8 billion.
AT&T had a monopoly on phone service in the United States for the majority of the twentieth century. The American District Telegraph Company was founded in St. Louis in 1878 as the American District Telegraph Company. Through a series of mergers, it expanded its services to Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, becoming Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1920, which was then a subsidiary of American Telephone and Telegraph Company. The latter was the successor to Alexander Graham Bell’s original Bell Telephone Company, which was founded in 1877.
In 1885, the American Bell Telephone Company established the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) subsidiary. After the American Bell Telephone Company sold its assets to its subsidiary, AT&T became the parent company in 1899. In 1994, the company was renamed AT&T Corp. The 1982 antitrust lawsuit United States v. AT&T resulted in the divestiture of AT&T’s (“Ma Bell”) local operating subsidiaries, which were grouped into seven Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs), colloquially known as “Baby Bells,” resulting in seven independent companies, including Southwestern Bell Corporation (SBC). In 1995, the company changed its name to SBC Communications Inc.
AT&T prepaid plans provide a simple, low-cost way to obtain a set amount of data each month without the need for a lengthy contract. When compared to AT&T’s standard post-paid unlimited data plans, these prepaid plans are generally very affordable, especially for single-line users. Unlike those offered by most larger carriers, AT&T prepaid plans allow you to pay monthly or for the entire year in one lump sum. The latter may appear to be a bad option, but it has a lower monthly price on average, which can save you a lot of money in the long run. When compared to AT&T’s postpaid plans, there is no credit check when you sign up for an AT&T prepaid plan. So, if credit is a concern for you, or you’re simply working on building up your score in the meanwhile, these plans are readily available to you.
AT&T’s main prepaid plan offerings are generally similar to what you’d find from smaller carriers – a monthly fee for one month of service with no long-term contractual obligations. These plans typically provide the most data for AT&T prepaid plans and are also the main plans that the carrier advertises for its prepaid service; however, multi-month plans may provide a better bang for your buck. You can pay one of the lowest prices for the most basic plan. This plan allows you to call and text as much as you want, and it includes 5GB of data, which is more than enough for email, light browsing, and the occasional YouTube video. Just keep in mind that this is the only prepaid plan that excludes use in Mexico and Canada. The monthly fee for this plan is $30. If you constantly use your phone for browsing, streaming music, and watching videos, an unlimited plan may be the best option for you. It’s only slightly more expensive with auto-pay than the 15GB plan. However, when the network is congested, you may experience slower speeds, and you will have to pay separately for hotspot data. The monthly fee for the unlimited plan is $65 USD.
Another option is the ‘pay upfront’ AT&T multi-month prepaid plan, which is similar to Mint Mobile in that you buy your months in bulk. Simply put, you can expect to pay a significant amount with these, but they average out to a much lower monthly price overall than the standard pay-monthly options. The current offerings are shown below. If you can pay for a full year in advance, AT&T’s 16GB prepaid plan is one of the best value options. 8GB per month is sufficient for extensive browsing and a small amount of music and video streaming. Furthermore, AT&T allows you to carry over unused data from one month to the next. However, be wary of this plan because it allows HD video streaming, which can quickly consume your entire data allowance.
While data allotments are prominently displayed in AT&T’s plans, they offer much more than that. Here’s what you can expect from data-allocated prepaid plans: Unlimited talk and text, roaming in Mexico and Canada (except on the 5GB plan), mobile hotspot support, 4G LTE connectivity, rollover data, and unlimited texting to Mexico, Canada, and over 100 other countries. And here are the benefits of the prepaid unlimited plans: Autopay discounts, unlimited talk, text, and data, roaming in Mexico and Canada, slowed speeds during network congestion (after 22GB for Unlimited Plus), and unlimited texting to Mexico, Canada, and more than 100 other countries are all available.
When deciding whether to go with a monthly or multi-month plan, two factors must be considered: how much data you require and what you can afford. If you require a large amount of data, you must choose a monthly plan because multi-month plans only provide 8GB of data. If your data requirements are minimal, you have a few options. Paying for a 12-month plan allows you to get 8GB of data per month and more features than the 5GB plan, plus you’ll save $60 over the course of the year. If you choose the 3-month plan, you will not save as much money, but you will be less concerned about running out of data. You’ll pay $3 more per month than the 5GB plan but get 3GB more data, which is a good deal considering AT&T charges $10/GB for extra data on the 5GB plan.
