Founded in 2006, Twitter is a social media networking website. The founders were Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams. Twitter is a billion-dollar publicly traded company. Though the headquarters are located in San Francisco, California, there are over 20 offices around the world. The current Executive Chairman is Omid R. Kordestani. Jack Dorsey still holds the position of Chief Executive Officer of the company. There are currently over 300 million users registered on Twitter.
Twitter is free for all users to join. You can easily sign up on the website. You will need to enter your name, email address, or phone number and desired username and password. You will need to verify your email address to be able to log into the website. After the verification, you will be able to edit your profile picture and include some details about yourself. You can choose the name that you want to be listed on your profile (this differs from your username), your location, your birthday, and a brief biography. The biography character limit is low, so you will not be able to include more than a paragraph or so. After you have created a profile, you will be able to “follow” people and they will be able to do the same with you. When you follow someone, you will be able to see their timelines, which will include their statuses, also known as “tweets”. Tweets are basically a short description of whatever is on your mind. The tweet character limit is 280 characters. According to Pear Analytics, over 40% of tweets are pointless babble, 37.6% of tweets are conversational, 8.7% of tweets are pass-along value, 5.9% of tweets are self-promotion, 3.8% of tweets are spam and 3.6% of tweets are news. When you see a tweet that you like, you have the option to Retweet, Retweet w/ a Quote, or Like it. If you Retweet w/ a Quote, you can respond to the tweet. You can also choose to simply Respond under the tweet as well. If you “Like” a tweet, it will be saved in a list that can be accessed by viewing it from your profile. Businesses are also allowed to advertise on Twitter, enabling their brand to appear on timelines.
If you would like to delete Twitter, follow the instructions below.
