Curiosity Stream is a video subscription service. It was founded in March 2015 by John Hendricks, the founder of Discovery, and his daughter, Elizabeth Hendricks, as Chief Executive Officer. The service expanded distribution to Amazon Channels before signing its first deal with a multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) in 2017, when it became available on Comcast’s set-top box VOD platform and the MSO’s Xfinity Stream app/portal. Clint Stinchcomb was appointed president and CEO of Curiosity Stream in June 2018, after joining the company in 2017 as Chief Distribution Officer. He is also the former CEO and co-founder of Poker Central. Stinchcomb previously served as managing director of Worldwide Media Group (WMG) and as executive vice president and general manager of Discovery Communications’ Emerging Television Networks.
The company signed a partnership agreement with Swedish telecommunications company Com Hem in July 2020 to bring the company’s library content to Sweden. Matthew Blank joined the Curiosity Stream board of directors in August 2020. Blank previously served as an advisor to Showtime Networks, where he was the chairman and CEO for over 20 years, overseeing series such as Homeland, Dexter, and Billions. Curiosity Stream became the first publicly traded streaming media company focused on factual content on October 15, 2020, when it began trading on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol “CURI.”
The company acquired One Day University, an adult education platform featuring lectures from university and college professors, in May 2021. The company announced a rebranding in August 2021, including the shortened name for its parent company, Curiosity, which is made up of Curiosity Stream (streaming service), Curiosity Channel (linear channels), and Curiosity Studios (original production). They have a long-standing promotion with Nebula to promote a bundle subscription for both services, which has resulted in significant growth of parts of both services, and it was announced in September 2021 that Curiosity purchased a minority share of Nebula, valuing the company at more than $50 million.
