DISH Network Corporation (commonly known as Dish Network) is a leading American television provider and owner of the direct-broadcast satellite provider Dish, as well as over-the-top IPTV service Sling TV. Additionally, Dish also offers mobile wireless service, Dish Wireless. In July 2020, Dish acquired prepaid service Boost Mobile and plans to add postpaid service in the near future. Based out of Englewood, Colorado, DISH Network employs 16,000 people and is currently headed by CEO Erik Carlson.
The company was originally founded in 1980 by Charlie Ergen as a satellite television equipment distributor, EchoStar Communications Corporation. In 1996, they began using the consumer brand DISH Network after the successful launch of their first satellite, EchoStar I. This marked the start of their subscription television services.
In December 2017, Joe Clayton retired after being president and CEO since June 2011, when Charlie Ergen resumed the post. Ergen has stated his priority is to diversify and update the company’s technology to provide internet, telephone, and video service for both home and mobile applications.
As of November 2016, the company served 13.7 million television and 580,000 broadband subscribers. In 2019, DISH entered an agreement in the Sprint/T-Mobile merger that allowed them to acquire Sprint’s prepaid wireless businesses, including Boost Mobile. This agreement made DISH the 4th-largest major wireless carrier. The Justice Department approved the merger and DISH has announced plans to deploy a 5G broadband network capable of serving 70% of the population by 2023.
