MagicJack was founded in 2007 by Dan Borislow and Donald Burns to provide internet-based telephone service plans to consumers. Dan Borislow remains the CEO of the company. In 2010 the original founding company, known then as Ymax, merged with Vocaltek to create MagicJack Vocaltek LTD which is based in Netanya, Israel. The service initially offered new phone numbers to its customers but in 2011 announced that customers would now be able to port their existing phone numbers into the service and use that number for the Voice Over IP (VOIP) service offered by MagicJack.
Customers who sign up for MagicJack receive a USB device that plugs into their computer or, in the case of MagicJack Plus, directly into their internet router and then allows the customer to connect a standard phone into the device for phone calls. Customers may then make unlimited calls to the USA and Canada with a few notable exceptions. These exceptions include calls to conference calls, a specific area code in Northern Canada, and much of Alaska and require an additional prepaid minutes plan. Calls to other countries are available for additional charges per minute which vary from country to country and calls to paid services such as 900 numbers are not allowed via MagicJack.
New customers may purchase their MagicJack device on the website for $35.00 for the device and first year of service, with the option to purchase a second device at the same time for $9.99. Additional years of service after the first year are available for $39.00 for one year or $89.00 for three years. The service does not have a minimum commitment for service plans and can be cancelled at any time desired by the customer.
