DTE Energy is an energy company based in Detroit, Michigan. The company is involved in developing and managing energy-related businesses and services nationwide, with one division focused on providing electric services to 2.2 million customers and natural gas utility services to 1.3 million customers within the state of Michigan. As of 2005, DTE energy listed 22 coal-fired power generating plants, most built within the 1950s and 1960s. Some of these plants have been or will be retired due to their age.

Due to electric choice initiatives in Michigan, customers may choose companies other than DTE to supply their electricity. However, regardless of this fact, distribution and metering of electric services in the area are still maintained and operated by DTE Energy. Customers who have chosen DTE to supply their electricity may choose from one of several different plans offered by the company. Plans include Smart Currents which includes a smart thermostat and lower rates on nights and weekends, Dynamic Peak Pricing which has prices per kWh that vary based on time and usage, time of day electric rate plans, plans for senior citizens, and a standard residential rate. Natural gas utility services can also be obtained through DTE Energy for residential customers within the state of Michigan. Pricing for this service will vary however, depending on location, plan chosen, and which appliances within the home use natural gas. DTE states that, on average, natural gas is available for approximately 1/3 of the cost of other utility sources.
